IMPORTANT

Please read this Disclaimer carefully before using the SnowDay Calculator. By accessing or using this website, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to the terms set out below.

1. Nature of the Service

SnowDay Calculator ("the Service," "we," "us," or "our") is a free, web-based probability tool designed to estimate the likelihood of school closures due to winter weather conditions. The Service generates a closure probability percentage based on weather inputs, including expected snowfall, temperature, wind speed, precipitation type, and storm timing, processed through a weighted algorithmic model.

The Service is intended to be used as a planning aid and informational reference only. It is not a substitute for official school district announcements, emergency alerts issued by local government authorities, or guidance from the National Weather Service (NWS) or NOAA. A probability output from this tool, whether 5% or 95%, is an estimate, not a guarantee.

2. No Guarantee of Accuracy

School closure decisions are made by individual school superintendents and district administrators exercising professional judgment informed by local road condition reports, staffing availability, building readiness, calendar constraints, and community safety standards. These factors exist partially or entirely outside the scope of any algorithmic model.

While our calculator uses multi-factor analysis based on data sourced from the National Weather Service and NOAA, and while we strive to maintain a high level of prediction accuracy, we make no warranty, express or implied, that any prediction produced by this tool will match the actual decision made by your school district.

NOTE

Actual school closure decisions depend on human judgment. Even a 95% prediction score does not mean the school will definitely be closed. Always verify with your district's official communication channels before making decisions.

3. Predictions Are for Planning Purposes Only

The probability percentages generated by SnowDay Calculator are intended to help students, parents, and educators make preliminary plans when winter weather is forecast. They are not authoritative statements of fact and should not be used as the sole basis for any consequential decision, including but not limited to:

  • Choosing not to send a child to school on a given day
  • Making childcare arrangements, transportation decisions, or employment commitments
  • Cancelling, scheduling, or rescheduling school-related events or examinations
  • Determining whether travel to a school facility is safe or advisable
  • Any professional, commercial, or official action based on the school's open/closed status

Final authority over school closure decisions rests exclusively with the relevant school district, and official announcements from the district supersede any prediction produced by this tool.

4. Weather Data Sources and Limitations

Our prediction model draws on publicly available meteorological data, including forecasts and alerts published by the National Weather Service (NWS) and NOAA. Weather data is inherently subject to rapid change. Storm tracks shift, precipitation amounts exceed or fall short of forecasts, and temperature conditions can change significantly within hours. A prediction generated at 8:00 PM may reflect materially different conditions than the same prediction refreshed at 4:00 AM.

We make no representation that the third-party weather data we rely upon is current, complete, or error-free at the time of your query. Data transmission delays, API outages, or changes in data source availability may affect the accuracy or availability of our predictions without notice.

5. Regional Variation Disclaimer

School closure thresholds vary significantly by geographic region, school district policy, and year-to-year administrative discretion. The same volume of snowfall that triggers a full cancellation in one district may not affect another district in a neighboring county or state. Our model applies regional sensitivity coefficients to account for known infrastructure and policy differences, but these adjustments are generalizations and cannot fully replicate the specific policies of every school district in the United States and Canada.

Users in regions with limited historical data or highly variable closure patterns should treat predictions as indicative rather than authoritative. Always consult your district's official inclement weather policy for the thresholds applicable to your specific school.

6. Remote Learning Days

Since 2020, a growing number of school districts have adopted virtual or remote learning day protocols as an alternative to traditional snow-day cancellations. In districts with active remote learning policies, a high closure probability may correspond to a virtual school day rather than a full day off. SnowDay Calculator predicts the likelihood that normal in-person instruction will not occur; it does not distinguish between a full cancellation and a switch to remote instruction. Users should check their district's specific inclement weather policy to understand which outcome is more likely in their area.

7. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, SnowDay Calculator, its owners, operators, contributors, and affiliates shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or exemplary damages arising from:

  • Your reliance on any prediction, estimate, or probability output generated by the Service
  • Inaccurate, delayed, or unavailable weather data from third-party sources
  • Your inability to access the Service due to technical issues, maintenance, or outages
  • Any decision, including decisions related to childcare, travel, employment, or safety, made in reliance on this Service
  • School closure decisions that differ from the probabilities predicted by this tool

This limitation applies regardless of the theory of liability (negligence, contract, tort, or otherwise) and even if SnowDay Calculator has been advised of the possibility of such damages.

8. No Professional or Emergency Advice

Nothing on SnowDay Calculator constitutes professional meteorological, legal, medical, or safety advice. During severe winter storms, blizzard conditions, or declared weather emergencies, you should follow guidance issued by local authorities, the National Weather Service, state emergency management agencies, and your school district, not this tool.

If you are in an emergency, contact local emergency services. Do not rely on a school closure probability tool for emergency decision-making.

9. External Links

The Service may contain links to external websites, school district pages, weather data sources, or third-party services. These links are provided for convenience and informational purposes only. SnowDay Calculator does not endorse, control, or accept responsibility for the content, accuracy, or privacy practices of any external site. Accessing external links is at your own risk.

The "Last Updated" date at the top of this page will reflect the date of the most recent revision. Your continued use of the Service following any update constitutes your acceptance of the revised Disclaimer. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
